Microchipping

Microchipping involves having an identification tag placed under a dog's skin between its shoulder blades to allow identification should the dog go missing or be stolen.  A vet inserts the microchip in your dog and every chip has a unique ID number that matches information about your dog held on a nationwide database, along with your contact details.  You provide this information when the chip is fitted. 

If Neighbourhood Environment Officers find your dog, we can use the information from the microchip to trace ownership. There is a limited out of hours service for collecting stray dogs or dealing with emergencies. We may impound stray or other dogs collected by the service in the council's kennels and hold for 5 days.

You must have a microchip number for your dog when you apply for a dog licence.
