STAND4TREES
To ensure improved tree cover within the Borough, our STAND4TREES initiative began in 2021 and will run until 2032. It is an ambitious yet achievable tree planting and promotion initiative that will engage local communities to help increase and enhance the level of tree cover on Council land and that of other agencies and private landowners. One of the actions within the STAND4TREES initiative is to plant a tree for every person in the Borough, which is approximately 160,000.
So far, the STAND4TREES initiative has seen over 45,000 trees being planted throughout Ards and North Down. This includes new woodland planting, hedgerows and orchards.
Community Orchards
One such initiative that STAND4TREES promotes is community orchards. Orchards have played an important role for hundreds of years. They provide a community space for celebrations, are a source of food as well as creating fantastic places for people to come together. They also encourage healthy eating and outdoor activities improving wellbeing and making our cities and neighbourhoods more pleasant places to live. Even small patches of land can be used to create a community orchard.
The council has helped develop 11 community orchards since the launch of the STAND4TREES initiative. Each community orchard has been planted by the local schools and community groups who continue to maintain each orchard.
