Age Friendly Businesses

What is an Age Friendly Business?

An age-friendly business is one that is welcoming and accessible, promotes independence, and is responsive to the needs of an older population.

To create an age-friendly business, you can

  • Think Accessibility: Consider how people with limited mobility access your business
  • Make Things Comfortable: Provide a comfortable shopping experience
  • Sight and Sound: Consider customers with vision or hearing limitations
  • Respect: Treat older customers with respect
  • Ask Your Customers: Ask for feedback from older customers
  • Understand the Numbers: Understand the demographics of your customer base

An age-friendly business is also a people-friendly business, and will be comfortable for other groups such as pregnant women, parents with children in strollers, people with injuries, people with sight, hearing or mobility limitations, people with limited English, and people with a mental illness.

Age Friendly Employer Pledge

The Age Friendly Employer Pledge is a nationwide programme for employers who recognise the importance and value of older workers. Employers commit to improving work for people in their 50s and 60s and taking the necessary action to help them flourish in a multigenerational workforce.

Dementia Friendly

As part of our Age Friendly work, Ards and North Down Borough Council has committed to be a welcoming Borough for all.  This includes striving to be a Dementia Friendly Council and Borough.

We encourage and support all types of businesses to roll out "Dementia Friends" to their workforce. A Dementia Friend is someone who learns about dementia so they can help their community so that people living with dementia can continue to live in the way they want.

If you would like to request an Information Session for your workplace visit dementiafriends.org.uk or contact your local Dementia Advisor.
